Rachel Hansen was 19 years old and living in Gilbert, Arizona. She was a horse trainer and animal lover who had been living and working on a ranch in Queen Creek in the months before her death. Her mother Kim described her as a fighter, a go-getter, driven and full of life. She was engaged and had recently moved into her own apartment near San Tan Village Parkway and Ray Road in Gilbert, just three miles from her family's home. She had only moved in a mattress and box spring; she was just getting started.
The last time Kim spoke to her daughter was the evening of June 3, 2022. Rachel had spent the day enjoying the amenities of her new apartment complex with her fiancé. Her fiancé left around midnight to go to work early the next day. Kim told Rachel she would come on Sunday to help her move in and get everything set up. Rachel said "I love you, mom." Everything seemed fine. Kim had no idea that would be the last time she would hear her daughter's voice.
Rachel was shot in the early morning hours of June 4, 2022. She called 911 herself. She was taken to the hospital and died there. Her killer has never been identified. Her parents, Todd and Kim, have kept her memory alive through Rachel's Rescue, a dog rescue organization started in her honor that has found homes for more than 300 dogs throughout the Valley.
On the night of June 2, 2022, a dark figure entered Rachel Hansen's apartment and stood over her bed, staring at her while she slept. She screamed and the person fled. Rachel did not move out; she was in the process of moving back into the apartment she had been subletting and had only just brought in a mattress and box spring. The following night, June 4, 2022 at approximately 2:00 a.m., the same or a similar dark figure returned to the apartment, kicked down her bedroom door, and shot her in the abdomen. Rachel called 911 herself. She was transported to the hospital and died there.
The apartment is in a gated complex near San Tan Village Parkway and Ray Road in Gilbert, just three miles from the Hansen family home. There were no cameras at the relevant locations and no witnesses have been publicly identified. No motive has ever been established. The detective assigned to the case described Rachel as "squeaky clean" with no known enemies. No weapon has been recovered and no suspect has been publicly named.
Police records released in 2024 revealed that in April 2022, approximately two months before her death, Rachel had called police to report that her fiancé's father had threatened her. When asked whether this individual was investigated, Gilbert Police Assistant Chief Jim Bisceglie declined to confirm or deny that any such investigation took place.
The Gilbert Police Department has investigated Rachel's murder since June 4, 2022. The case has been extremely difficult to advance publicly. The apartment complex is gated, there were no cameras at the relevant locations, and no witnesses have been identified. No motive has been established. The detective on the case described Rachel as having no known enemies. No weapon has been recovered and no suspect has ever been named.
A significant complication in the investigation is the degree of redaction applied to all publicly released materials. The 911 transcript from Rachel's own call, body camera footage from the responding officers, and a 338-page police report released in 2024 are all extensively redacted to the point of providing minimal new information to the public or to Rachel's family. The police report reveals the case was internally classified as "inactive — suspended, lack of leads or suspects" as of early 2024, with the last detective entry in February of that year noting the case had been forwarded to Silent Witness. Gilbert Police have repeatedly and publicly insisted the case remains active.
Key details disclosed by the report include that Rachel reported a threat from her fiancé's father to police in April 2022, approximately two months before her murder. When pressed, Gilbert Police Assistant Chief Jim Bisceglie declined to confirm or deny whether this individual was investigated. The release of this information deepened concerns held by Rachel's family that the investigation has not been fully transparent with them.
Private investigator Justin Yentes of Arizona Investigative Associates has been working with the Hansen family pro bono since mid-2024. The family has worked to increase the Silent Witness reward and has distributed flyers throughout Gilbert and the wider Phoenix metro area. As of June 2025, Todd and Kim Hansen say they have had some recent conversations with detectives that included what they described as good leads and good information, though they remain without answers after three years.
Rachel Hansen was shot to death in her Gilbert apartment in the early morning hours of June 4, 2022. She was 19 years old. Someone entered her apartment the night before and stood over her bed; they came back the following night and killed her. The person who did this has not been identified. A $15,000 reward is available for information leading to an arrest. All tips can be submitted anonymously.
Rachel Hansen was 19 years old and just moving into her own apartment. She had talked to her mom that night and said I love you. Her fiancé left at midnight. Two hours later someone kicked down her bedroom door. She called 911 herself. She was three miles from home.
Three years have passed. Her parents have raised the reward, hired a private investigator, distributed flyers, posted on social media, and built a dog rescue in her name because Rachel loved animals and it was something they had talked about doing together. They have done everything a family can do while waiting for a stranger to decide to tell the truth.
"The person that took her life is still out there," Todd and Kim said. "Please, please speak up. If you know something, say something." She is not forgotten.
