Alex Stevens was 29 years old and a lifelong resident of Okmulgee. He was one of four close friends who left Billy Chastain's home on the evening of October 9, 2022, on bicycles. He did not return.
Stevens's mother, Teresa Stevens, spoke publicly in the days following the discovery of the men's remains, describing her son as someone who, whatever circumstances surrounded that night, did not deserve what was done to him. She described the manner of the killings as consistent with a message being sent.
Autopsy results confirmed Stevens died from gunshot wounds. His remains, along with those of his three friends, were discovered on October 14, 2022, in the Deep Fork River near the Sharp Road bridge, five days after the men were last seen.

Billy Jack Chastain was 30 years old and lived on 6th Street in Okmulgee, the home from which all four men departed on the evening of October 9, 2022. He was the younger of two brothers killed that night. His wife, Megan Gordon, described Okmulgee as a very small town where everyone's parents know everyone else's parents, and said the loss left a void she could not put into words.
Investigators later determined that a bicycle belonging to Billy Chastain was in Joseph Kennedy's possession in the days following the murders. Kennedy allegedly brought the bicycle to a woman's home in Gore, Oklahoma, and attempted to give it to her son. The bicycle was later identified as belonging to Billy and was recovered as evidence.
DNA analysis of blood swabs collected from vehicles associated with Kennedy yielded a preliminary partial match to Billy Chastain, according to charging documents filed by the Okmulgee County District Attorney.

Mark Chastain was 32 years old, the older of two brothers among the four victims. His grandmother, Milissia Smith, described Mark and Billy as the definition of brothers who were always together. Mark's wife, Jessica Chastain, spoke to reporters in the days after the discovery of the remains, expressing that she was left with more questions than answers.
It was Mark Chastain's cell phone, equipped with the Life360 location-sharing application, that provided investigators with their first critical lead. Location data from the app placed Mark's phone at Joseph Kennedy's West 20th Street scrapyard on the afternoon and evening of October 9. The phone later pinged at a nearby gas station, where surveillance video showed Kennedy at the pump in his PT Cruiser. Personal items belonging to Mark, including broken dentures and a black wagon, were subsequently recovered at the scrapyard property.
Autopsy results confirmed Mark died from gunshot wounds. He was severed at the waist, consistent with the postmortem treatment of all four victims, according to the Okmulgee County District Attorney.

Michael Sparks was 32 years old and one of four lifelong friends from Okmulgee who disappeared together on the night of October 9, 2022. A mother searching for the father of their four children was among the family members who posted pleas for information online in the frantic days before the men's remains were found.
Autopsy results revealed that Sparks sustained the most extensive postmortem injuries of the four victims. In addition to being severed at the waist, as were all four men, both of Sparks's arms were also removed from his body, according to statements made by Okmulgee County District Attorney Carol Iski at the December 2022 press conference announcing formal charges.
Blood evidence collected from vehicles connected to Joseph Kennedy was submitted for DNA analysis. Testing identified multiple male DNA profiles from those swabs; the source of all profiles had not been publicly confirmed as of the filing of formal charges in December 2022.
On the evening of October 9, 2022, four friends left Billy Chastain's home on 6th Street in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, on bicycles. Alex Stevens, 29; Billy Chastain, 30; his brother Mark Chastain, 32; and Michael Sparks, 32, did not return. Family members reported the men missing to the Okmulgee Police Department on October 10. Investigators determined that all four men had cell phones with them but that attempts to reach them went directly to voicemail.
A witness who had been invited to join the men that night but declined told investigators the group intended to commit some form of criminal act, describing the plan as wanting to "hit a lick big enough for all of them." Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice acknowledged this information publicly but stated that the nature of the planned act was unknown and that it did not diminish the severity of what was done to the men.
Location data from the Life360 app on Mark Chastain's phone placed all four men at a scrapyard on West 20th Street in Okmulgee, owned and operated by Joseph Lloyd Kennedy. The phone data showed the men arrived at the scrapyard between approximately 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. A sheriff's deputy living less than half a mile from the property reported hearing ten to twelve high-powered rifle shots coming from the direction of the scrapyard that evening. Surveillance footage from a Coca-Cola bottling plant across the road recorded Kennedy coming and going from the property multiple times that night.
On October 14, 2022, dismembered human remains were discovered protruding from the water at a shallow section of the Deep Fork River near the Sharp Road bridge, approximately two miles from the scrapyard. The remains were identified as those of all four men. Autopsy results confirmed each victim died from gunshot wounds and had been severed at the waist postmortem. Michael Sparks also had both arms removed from his body. None of the men's bicycles were ever recovered.
Joseph Kennedy was named a person of interest on October 18, 2022. He had been questioned by investigators in the days following the disappearances and initially appeared cooperative, but was reported missing the day after the bodies were found. His blue Chrysler PT Cruiser was discovered abandoned behind a business in Morris, Oklahoma. On October 17, a license plate reader operated by Daytona Beach Shores Police in Florida identified Kennedy driving a black Toyota Tundra that had been reported stolen from Okmulgee County. He was arrested in Florida and extradited to Oklahoma.
According to an affidavit filed by the district attorney and unsealed at a December 2022 bond hearing, Kennedy visited a woman he was in a relationship with in Gore, Oklahoma, on the night of October 14, returning again in the early morning hours of October 15, hours after the bodies were publicly discovered. The woman told investigators Kennedy was agitated, said he was leaving and she would never see him again, and told her that the victims had been stealing from him, that he had lost control, and that he had shot them and cut them up. On December 5, 2022, Okmulgee County District Attorney Carol Iski formally charged Joseph Lloyd Kennedy with four counts of first-degree murder with deliberate intent.
The Okmulgee Police Department led the investigation into the disappearance and deaths of the four men, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies across Oklahoma. By the time formal murder charges were filed in December 2022, investigators had logged more than 1,000 combined manhours. Chief Joe Prentice described the case as complicated and fast-evolving, requiring coordination across jurisdictions and the rapid analysis of multiple streams of physical and digital evidence.
The investigation's first critical lead came from Mark Chastain's cell phone, which was equipped with the Life360 family location application. Investigators used location data from the app to trace the men's route from Billy Chastain's residence to Joseph Kennedy's scrapyard on West 20th Street, where the phone remained active for a period of time before ceasing contact. That same evening, a sheriff's deputy residing approximately four-tenths of a mile from the Kennedy property reported hearing ten to twelve high-powered rifle shots. Investigators later recovered 7.62 caliber shell casings and a bullet extracted from a tree on the scrapyard's adjoining lot.
A search of Kennedy's scrapyard and the property immediately adjacent to it uncovered blood evidence on the ground, broken dentures and a black wagon belonging to Mark Chastain, and other personal items linked to the victims. Surveillance footage from a Coca-Cola bottling plant directly across the road from the scrapyard captured Kennedy leaving the property in his blue PT Cruiser and returning later that night in a dark-colored Toyota Tundra, a vehicle later determined to have been stolen from an acquaintance. Cell phone tower data extracted from Kennedy's own device placed him in the vicinity of the Sharp Road bridge over the Deep Fork River, where the men's remains were subsequently found.
DNA analysis conducted by state laboratory technicians identified two separate male DNA profiles from blood swabs collected from Kennedy's pickup truck, and two additional male profiles from swabs taken from the stolen Toyota Tundra Kennedy was driving when arrested in Florida. Preliminary testing returned a partial match between one of those profiles and Billy Chastain. When Kennedy was arrested in Florida, investigators noted blood on one of his shoes.
A witness in Gore, Oklahoma, who had been in a relationship with Kennedy, provided investigators with an account of two visits Kennedy made to her home. During the second visit, in the early hours of October 15, she said Kennedy appeared agitated and told her he was leaving permanently. He stated the victims had been stealing from him, that he had lost control and started shooting, and that he had subsequently cut them up. Kennedy also brought a bicycle to her home during one of those visits, telling her it was a gift for her son. That bicycle was later identified as belonging to Billy Chastain.
Kennedy had a prior criminal history directly relevant to the investigation's theory of motive. In 2012, he had been charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon after shooting a man he believed was stealing from him by walking through the railroad tracks on his scrapyard property. That victim survived. Kennedy had been serving a deferred ten-year sentence for that offense at the time of the 2022 murders, meaning the Deep Fork River killings constituted a direct violation of his existing probation terms. That probation violation provided the initial legal basis for his detention upon extradition from Florida before formal murder charges were filed.
District Attorney Carol Iski stated at the December 2022 press conference that the evidence assembled did not indicate Kennedy had any assistance in either committing the murders or disposing of the bodies. The case moved into pre-trial proceedings through 2023 and 2024, with Kennedy's preliminary hearing, originally set for June 2024, subsequently delayed to November 2024. As of the most recent publicly available court information, the case remains in pre-trial status. Kennedy is held without bond.
Case Status as of May 2026: Joseph Lloyd Kennedy has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder with deliberate intent in connection with the deaths of Alex Stevens, Billy Chastain, Mark Chastain, and Michael Sparks. He is held without bond. His preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for June 2024, was delayed to November 2024. No trial date has been publicly confirmed and no verdict has been entered as of the most recent available information. The charges alleged are not convictions; Kennedy is presumed innocent unless and until found guilty in a court of law. The offense is punishable by death, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, or life imprisonment with the possibility of parole under Oklahoma statute.
Kennedy's 2012 conviction for shooting a man he believed was trespassing on his scrapyard property established a documented behavioral pattern more than a decade before the 2022 killings. In that incident, Kennedy confronted a man walking railroad tracks through his property and shot him. The prior offense mirrors the alleged motive in the 2022 case: perceived theft or trespass on property Kennedy viewed as his exclusive domain. The deferred sentence left Kennedy on active probation at the time of the murders, a legal circumstance he would have been acutely aware of. Research on targeted violence consistently identifies prior similar offenses as among the strongest predictors of future lethal escalation.
The four victims were young men in their late twenties to early thirties, described as lifelong friends. According to investigators, they may have approached the scrapyard that night with the intention of committing a crime, a context that placed them in a high-risk situation with limited ability to seek help or report what happened to them. Kennedy's alleged confession framed the killings as a response to perceived theft, suggesting the encounter escalated rapidly once he confronted the men on his property. The isolated industrial setting of the scrapyard, the late hour, and the victims' reported intent to engage in criminal activity created conditions in which Kennedy would have calculated that the killings were unlikely to be immediately traced to him.
All four men were shot to death and then severed at the waist postmortem. Michael Sparks was additionally dismembered at both arms. Postmortem dismemberment in a non-sexual homicide context is most commonly associated with body disposal and concealment: reducing volume to facilitate transport and submerging or scattering remains to delay or prevent identification. The use of a secondary stolen vehicle to transport the remains to the river, combined with the late-night timing and choice of a shallow section of the Deep Fork River, reflects a deliberate effort to dispose of evidence. The failure to recover the bicycles suggests additional disposal effort beyond the bodies themselves.
Kennedy's behavior in the days following the killings is consistent with documented patterns of post-offense flight and attempted cover: initially cooperating with investigators to establish a plausible baseline, then fleeing the state when the bodies were discovered. His decision to visit his Gore contact twice, including hours after the bodies became public news, and to make an explicit verbal confession during those visits, reflects significant psychological disorganization under pressure. He abandoned his own vehicle, stole two others in sequence, and traveled more than 1,200 miles before being identified by a license plate reader. The confession he made to the Gore witness became central to the charging affidavit.
The evidentiary case assembled by Okmulgee investigators drew on multiple independent streams: cell phone location data placing the victims at the scrapyard; Kennedy's own cell tower records placing him at the disposal site; surveillance footage from a neighboring commercial property; gunshot reports from a law enforcement resident nearby; shell casing and ballistic recovery from the scrapyard lot; DNA profiling from blood in two vehicles; blood evidence on Kennedy's shoe at the time of arrest; recovery of victims' personal items at the scene; and an alleged verbal confession to a civilian witness. The convergence of digital, forensic, physical, and testimonial evidence across multiple independent sources significantly limits the range of viable defense strategies.
Under Oklahoma law, first-degree murder with deliberate intent carries three possible penalties: death, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, or life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. Legal analysts speaking publicly after the charges were filed noted that the nature of the offense, specifically the killing of four people followed by deliberate postmortem dismemberment, placed Kennedy at significant risk of prosecutors pursuing the death penalty. Kennedy was appointed public defenders and has remained in pre-trial custody without bond since his extradition. His preliminary hearing was delayed from June to November 2024; as of the most recent public record, no trial date has been set.
Alex Stevens was twenty-nine years old, a young man from a small town who his mother loved fiercely and publicly, even when it was painful to speak. Teresa Stevens went before reporters and cameras at the worst moment of her life and said what needed to be said: that no one deserved what was done to her son. Not for any reason. She was right.
Alex grew up in Okmulgee alongside the friends he died with. He was part of a close circle whose lives were woven together in the way that only happens in small towns, where you grow up knowing everyone and being known by everyone. He deserved to grow old in that town, or to leave it on his own terms. He did neither. He is remembered.
Billy Jack Chastain was thirty years old, a husband, and the younger of two brothers killed the same night on the same ground. His wife, Megan Gordon, described their hometown the way people do when they have loved it their whole lives, even with its difficulties. She searched for him, and then she lost him, and that is a grief that does not resolve.
It was Billy's home the four friends left from that October evening. His bicycle was the one taken from him and handed off as though it meant nothing. The investigators who followed every thread of evidence until charges were filed did so because Billy Chastain's life mattered and the truth of what happened to him mattered. He is remembered.
Mark Chastain was thirty-two years old, a husband, and by all accounts inseparable from his younger brother Billy. Their grandmother said they were the definition of brothers, always together. She was not wrong. In death, they were together too, found in the same water, remembered in the same breath.
It was Mark's phone that led investigators to the truth. The small, mundane fact of a location app running in his pocket became the thread that unraveled everything. His wife, Jessica, said she was left with more questions than answers. The work of law enforcement and prosecutors has been to reduce those questions, one by one, until something like justice becomes possible. Mark Chastain deserves that justice. He is remembered.
Michael Sparks was thirty-two years old and the father of four children. Somewhere in Okmulgee, those children are growing up without him. A mother looked for the father of her children online in October 2022, posting and hoping, and the answer that came back was the worst one. That is a weight carried forward into every ordinary day.
Michael Sparks was a friend, a father, and a man from a town that knew him. Whatever brought him to that scrapyard on October 9th, he did not forfeit his right to life, and he did not forfeit his children's right to a father. What was done to him was wrong. He is remembered.
