| Name | Sylena Jo Dalton |
| Age at Death | 20 |
| From | Strasburg, Virginia |
| Cause of Death | Stabbed five times in the chest |
| Mother | Angela Stover |
Sylena Jo Dalton was 20 years old and lived with her infant daughter Allyson in a second-floor apartment on the 100 block of Charles Street in Strasburg, Virginia. She was a young mother navigating life largely on her own. At the time of her death she had been pursuing child support from Daniel Pompell, Allyson's father, who was not living with them. Pompell had been ordered to take a paternity test. She was employed; it was a coworker who found her body that afternoon when she did not appear for work.
Sylena was stabbed five times in the chest and found on the couch of her apartment. The murder weapon was removed from the scene. Investigators determined her murder occurred between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. on July 27, 1998. Her infant daughter Allyson was gone. Sylena Jo Dalton was 20 years old. She deserved better than what she got. She deserved to raise her daughter.
Her family waited 27 years for an arrest. It came in September 2025. A trial date had not been set as of the date of publication. Sylena's daughter has still not been found.
| Name | Allyson Kathleen Dalton |
| Age Missing | 10 weeks old |
| Age Today | Would be 27 |
| Hair / Eyes | Brown / Blue — at time of disappearance |
| Status | Whereabouts unknown — dead or alive not confirmed |
Allyson Kathleen Dalton was ten weeks old on July 27, 1998. She had brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen at approximately 7:45 a.m. that morning with her mother Sylena at their apartment on Charles Street in Strasburg. When Sylena's body was found that afternoon, Allyson was gone. Several of her baby bottles were also missing. She has never been found.
Investigators have consistently believed Allyson was abducted by the person who killed her mother. One neighbor reported seeing a man putting a baby into a truck in the area that morning. A witness heard a disturbance in the apartment and then saw Daniel Pompell leaving the building with what he later claimed was a jacket bundled under his arm. Virginia State Police have stated that they do not know whether Allyson is dead or alive. No charges have been filed in connection with her disappearance.
Age progression photographs have been released twice: the first when Allyson would have been 13 years old, and a second in 2017 when she would have been approximately 19 or 20. In February 2026, Virginia State Police conducted a grid search in Fauquier County, approximately 44 miles from Strasburg, in connection with the ongoing investigation. Details of what prompted the search were not publicly disclosed.
If Allyson is alive today, she is 27 years old. She may not know her true identity. She may have been raised under a different name. If you believe you may be Allyson Dalton, or if you have any information about where she may be, Virginia State Police are asking you to come forward.
On the morning of July 27, 1998, Sylena Jo Dalton and her ten-week-old daughter Allyson were last seen together at approximately 7:45 a.m. at their second-floor apartment on the 100 block of Charles Street in Strasburg, Virginia. Later that day, at approximately 2:25 p.m., one of Sylena's coworkers arrived at the apartment and found her body on the couch. She had been stabbed five times in the chest. Allyson was not in the apartment. Several baby bottles that had been there in the morning were also gone. The murder weapon had been removed from the scene.
Investigators determined the murder had occurred between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. Neighbors reported they had not heard any screams or disturbance, but one neighbor stated they had seen a man putting a baby into a truck in the area. A witness reported hearing a disturbance inside the apartment and then observed Daniel E. Pompell leaving the building with what he described as a jacket bundled under his arm. Pompell was Allyson's biological father and had been in an on-and-off relationship with Sylena. At the time of the murder, Sylena was pursuing child support from him and he was scheduled to take a paternity test.
Pompell told police he had gone to Sylena's apartment that morning, knocked on the door, received no answer, and left. Witnesses contradicted this account; some reported hearing a disturbance inside the apartment while he was there. Virginia State Police named him as a person of interest early in the investigation but did not have sufficient evidence to charge him for nearly three decades.
In March 2025, investigators obtained a DNA sample from Pompell through a search warrant. DNA testing matched his profile to a red mechanic's rag found next to Sylena's body at the time of the murder. He was arrested on September 26, 2025 and charged with one count of first-degree murder. No charges have been filed in connection with Allyson's disappearance. As of the date of publication, Allyson Kathleen Dalton has been missing for 27 years. Investigators have stated they do not know whether she is alive or dead.
Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations Culpeper Field Office has led the investigation since July 1998. From the outset the case presented an unusual and compounding complexity: it was simultaneously a homicide and an infant abduction. The investigation involved both VSP agents and analysts from the Homeland Security Division's Violent Crime Analytical Support Team. Over the course of 27 years, agents were assisted by the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, which provided funding through the Virginia Sexual Assault Kit Initiative; the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; and the Shenandoah County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
Daniel Pompell was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation. Several factors pointed to him: he was Allyson's biological father; Sylena had been seeking child support and had ordered a paternity test; witnesses placed him at the apartment on the morning of the murder, contradicting his claim that he knocked and left with no response; a witness heard a disturbance and saw him leave with a bundle; and a neighbor reported seeing a man place a baby in a truck. However, investigators did not have physical evidence sufficient to charge him, and the case remained open for nearly three decades.
The breakthrough came in March 2025, when investigators obtained Pompell's DNA through a search warrant. Testing matched his DNA to a red mechanic's rag found on the floor of Sylena's apartment next to her body in 1998. The same testing confirmed his paternity of Allyson. He was arrested September 26, 2025 and charged with first-degree murder.
As of the date of publication, no charges have been filed in connection with Allyson's disappearance. Investigators have stated they do not know whether she is alive or dead. In February 2026, VSP conducted a grid search near Route 29 and Airlie Road in Warrenton, Fauquier County, approximately 44 miles from Strasburg, in connection with the case. Details of what prompted the search were not released. Allyson's fate remains unknown. If she is alive, she is 27 years old and may have been raised under a different name and identity.
As of the date of publication, Daniel Pompell has not been charged in connection with the disappearance of Allyson Kathleen Dalton. No potential suspects other than Pompell have been publicly identified in her case. Investigators have stated that they do not know whether Allyson is alive or dead. She would be 27 years old today. If she is alive, she may have been raised under a different name and may be unaware of her true identity. Virginia State Police are asking anyone with information about Allyson's whereabouts to come forward. If you believe you may be Allyson Dalton, you are encouraged to contact Virginia State Police at 1-888-300-0156.
Sylena Jo Dalton was 20 years old. She was a mother. She was fighting for her daughter, for child support, for a paternity test, for the acknowledgment that her little girl deserved to be cared for. She was stabbed to death on her couch on a summer morning in 1998 while her baby lay nearby. Someone took that baby and walked out the door.
Sylena's family waited 27 years for an arrest. Twenty-seven years. Through two sets of age progression photographs, through vigils, through countless tips that went nowhere, through anniversaries that passed with no answers. Then, in September 2025, Virginia State Police made the arrest. A mechanic's rag. DNA. The evidence had been there all along, waiting for science to catch up.
Allyson Kathleen Dalton was ten weeks old. She is not forgotten either. She may be alive right now, 27 years old, living under a name that is not hers, in a life that was built on the murder of her mother. She may not know. If she is out there, she deserves to know the truth. And Sylena deserves for her daughter to come home.
If you have any information about where Allyson may be, or if you believe you may be Allyson Dalton, Virginia State Police are asking you to call. The number is 1-888-300-0156. Someone knows something. Someone has always known.
