The Victim

Sonia Exelby

Sonia Exelby was 32 years old and lived in Portsmouth, England. She had studied music in college. Friends described her as talented and deeply kind. She was also deeply vulnerable, having struggled for years with serious mental health challenges that included suicidal ideation.

Sonia deserved care, safety, and proper mental health support. Those around her who loved her tried to help. UK authorities had intervened previously when she had planned to travel abroad. She was stopped, returned to treatment, and monitored. The system tried. It was not enough to protect her from someone who had spent two years cultivating access to her at her most vulnerable.

Investigators and forensic psychologists who reviewed the case were clear: Sonia was exploited. The evidence showed she was being controlled, that she was afraid, and that she had come to believe there was no way out. She was a victim. We will say her name with love and without judgment.

01
Background

What We Know

Sonia Exelby was a 32-year-old woman from Portsmouth, England, who had struggled for years with serious mental health challenges. In 2023 she connected online with Dwain Hall, 53, a married man from Ocala, Florida, who operated a roadside assistance business. They communicated for approximately two years through a fetish website. UK authorities had previously intervened when Sonia had planned to travel to the United States and had returned her to treatment and monitoring.

Forensic psychologists who reviewed the case described Hall's approach over those two years as a deliberate pattern of exploitation, mirroring Sonia's darkest beliefs and positioning himself as the solution to her pain. His behaviour displayed traits of antisocial personality disorder and malignant narcissism. He did not need to persuade Sonia. He simply validated and cultivated her vulnerability over time.

On October 10, 2025, Sonia flew from London to Gainesville Regional Airport in Florida. Before picking her up Hall stopped at a Walmart where he purchased paracord, gun cleaner, and a shovel. They drove to an Airbnb in Reddick, Florida, which Sonia had paid for in advance. Evidence from October 11, 2025, shows Sonia messaging a friend on Discord saying she was broken and in severe pain. She wrote that she thought he would do it quickly and not give her mind time to process. She also wrote that Hall had told her the only way out was to shoot him, something she said she could not do. Investigators concluded these messages showed Hall was controlling her, that she was afraid, and that she had made a mistake.

On October 12 Hall purchased a tarp at Lowe's. Surveillance footage showed movement in his passenger seat as he drove toward Marion Oaks. Cell phone data placed him at the burial site for approximately one hour. Sonia's remains were found in a shallow grave there on October 17, 2025. The autopsy found four stab wounds hitting her aorta, esophagus, and stomach. The manner of death was ruled homicide.

Investigation

The Investigation

The investigation was a rapid international effort involving UK police, Interpol, FDLE, and multiple Florida county agencies. When Sonia missed her return flight on October 13, UK authorities contacted Interpol and FDLE within hours. Investigators traced fraudulent charges on Sonia's debit card to Hall's roadside assistance business, which became the first concrete link between Hall and the victim.

When detectives first contacted Hall he denied knowing Sonia, claiming a woman had simply called him for roadside help and he had no further information. He then changed his account, admitting he had met her and described their interaction as consensual. Investigators found a deleted video on his phone showing Sonia covered in bruises and visibly distressed. They also recovered Discord messages Sonia had sent a friend from inside the Airbnb expressing fear, pain, and a belief that she was trapped. These communications formed the core of the evidence that Hall was in control of the situation and that Sonia was afraid.

A shovel found in Hall's garage tested positive for Sonia's DNA. A shovel brand label was found at the burial site matching the brand Hall had purchased. A jail call in which Hall told his wife to expect a package from a friend in six months led investigators to recover the murder weapon from Ohio. Sonia's bag was also found in a donation bin in Gainesville.

Hall later told detectives that Sonia was "happy now because she got what she wanted." Forensic psychologists consulted on the case rejected this framing entirely, describing Hall's behaviour as a two-year campaign of predatory grooming that exploited a severely vulnerable person rather than any form of mutual arrangement.

In Memoriam

She Is Not Forgotten

Sonia Exelby was 32 years old. She was talented. She studied music. She was loved by her family and friends. She also suffered deeply, for a long time, in ways that made her vulnerable to a man who spent two years building access to her pain rather than helping her heal from it.

Mental illness is not a character flaw. Vulnerability is not consent. Sonia was a victim. Investigators were clear: the evidence showed she was being controlled, that she was afraid, and that she had come to believe there was no way out. A forensic psychologist who reviewed the case described what Hall did as positioning himself as the only solution to her suffering. That is not a mutual arrangement. That is predation.

Sonia's family and friends loved her. UK authorities tried to protect her. She deserved more than the world gave her. We say her name with kindness and without judgment. She deserved to live.

"His behaviour displays the traits of antisocial personality disorder and malignant narcissism. He mirrored her darkest beliefs, positioning himself as the sole solution to her pain. This was never a mutual fantasy."
