The Victim

Silan Tut

Silan Tut was 21 years old, a Turkish national living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She and her boyfriend, Serkan Akcilad, shared an apartment at the Vim Vigor Lofts complex on the 1300 block of North 10th Street. Very little has been made public about Silan's background or life beyond what court documents reveal. Her family was in Turkey. She was young, far from home, and living with the man who would take her life.

Silan was killed on or around January 24, 2025. For approximately 20 days after her death, Akcilad remained in the apartment with her body while actively communicating with her family in Turkey, impersonating her in text messages and sending them an old photo to convince them she was alive. He staged the scene. He attempted to clean up the evidence. He moved her body to the location where police ultimately found her just one day before he went to the police station.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office officially identified Silan on March 13, 2025, following the autopsy. She had suffered 12 stab wounds to her neck, abdomen, back, and right arm, with injuries to her carotid artery, lung, heart, liver, and diaphragm. Her death was ruled a homicide. Her family in Turkey learned the truth only after police became involved. No public photograph of Silan has been released.

Background

What We Know

Silan Tut and Serkan Akcilad were both Turkish nationals living together in Milwaukee. On the evening of January 24, 2025, a neighbor reported hearing the two arguing loudly, with screaming that lasted five to ten minutes. That same night, surveillance footage from a nearby Pick 'n Save grocery store showed Akcilad purchasing Clorox bleach and Raid insect repellent. Akcilad told police he bought the supplies because they planned to go to Chicago that weekend and wanted to clean up after their pet hamsters before leaving. He said he came home from the store to find Silan dead on the floor, covered in blood, and claimed he initially thought she was joking. He told detectives he fainted from shock upon touching her and found her still dead when he came around.

He did not call police. The following day, January 25, Akcilad purchased a nail gun and shot himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt. The nail extended into his brain. He did not seek medical attention and continued living in the apartment with Silan's body for the next three weeks, sleeping on the floor beside her. He used her phone throughout this period to send messages to her family in Turkey, including an old photograph he claimed showed her getting ready for a wedding, to convince them she was alive and well.

On February 27, 2025, Akcilad walked into the Milwaukee Police Administration Building. He used Google Translate on his phone to communicate with officers and told them his girlfriend had been dead in their apartment for approximately 20 days. He later admitted that the only reason he came forward was that the property management company was scheduled to inspect the apartment the following day. The pair had received an eviction notice in January for $1,257 in past-due rent.

Investigation

The Investigation

The investigation into Silan's death began the moment Akcilad walked into the police station. Officers observed the nail lodged in his skull upon his arrival. When police searched the apartment, they found Silan's remains staged on the floor, with a pillow placed beneath her head and her arms at her sides. The body was emitting a strong odor consistent with advanced decomposition. A large area rug had been placed over a significant blood pool on the living room floor. Blood spatter indicating an arterial wound was found throughout the apartment, along with drag marks suggesting the body had been moved.

Clothing with possible blood was found in the washing machine. A box cutter was recovered from the dishwasher. No sharp knives were found anywhere in the apartment, despite Akcilad acknowledging the couple had owned them. The nail gun used in his suicide attempt was never located. Receipts recovered from the trash spanned February 14 through 21, confirming Akcilad had been present and receiving deliveries in the weeks following her death. A Pick 'n Save receipt from January 24 for bleach and insect repellent was found in his vehicle, and store surveillance confirmed he purchased those items that night.

The autopsy, conducted by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, documented 12 stab wounds to Silan's neck, abdomen, back, and right arm. The wounds caused injuries to her carotid artery, lung, heart, liver, and diaphragm. Forensic analysis established she was killed elsewhere in the apartment and moved to the location where she was found. Akcilad denied killing her throughout questioning and denied cleaning the apartment or staging the scene, despite the physical evidence directly contradicting both claims.

In Memoriam

She Is Not Forgotten

Silan Tut was 21 years old. She was from Turkey, living in a country far from her family, in an apartment with a man who killed her. Her family did not know she was gone. For three weeks, while she lay on the floor of that apartment, they received messages from her phone, photos of her face. They were told she was going to a wedding. They believed she was alive.

The people who loved her were kept from the truth until police took it away from the man who had been controlling it. There is no word adequate for what was done to her, both in her death and in the weeks that followed. She was 21 years old. She was a person with a family who loved her, who were waiting to hear from her, who had no idea.

No public photograph of Silan has been shared. Her family is in Turkey. Her name deserves to be known, and she deserves to be more than the details of how she died. Silan Tut was 21 years old. She is not forgotten.
