The Victim

Kawsheen Gelzer

Kawsheen Gelzer was 39 years old and lived in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. He was known in the neighborhood and had an informal arrangement with Nicholas McGee and Heather Stines -- crashing on their couch at their Nostrand Avenue apartment in Flatbush in exchange for drugs.

His mother reported him missing on April 22, 2022 -- more than a month after he had already been killed. She had no way of knowing. He was gone and there was no trace of him. He would not be identified for nearly two years.

Kawsheen Gelzer deserved to be found. He deserved to be identified. His mother deserved to know what happened to her son. She spent two years not knowing. We will say his name.

01
Background

What We Know

Nicholas McGee, 48, and his common-law wife Heather Stines, 48, lived in a third-floor apartment on Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Kawsheen Gelzer, 39, had an informal arrangement with the couple -- he supplied them with drugs and in exchange was allowed to sleep on their couch. According to prosecutors, on March 25, 2022, a dispute arose. Gelzer asked Stines for sexual favors and she refused. McGee came home later, stewing with rage over what he felt was disrespect. He told Stines he was going to kill Gelzer.

While Gelzer slept face-down on the couch, McGee grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the back. Gelzer woke up and fought back, knocking the knife to the ground. McGee picked up a hammer and repeatedly slammed it into Gelzer's head. He reclaimed the knife and kept stabbing. Gelzer, still conscious, tried to flee but slipped on his own blood and fell to the floor. He asked McGee why he was doing this. McGee told him it was because he was a smart-mouth and he was tired of him. McGee stabbed Gelzer repeatedly in the chest until he died. Medical testimony at trial established more than 60 sharp force wounds to the head, torso and extremities.

After the killing McGee went through Gelzer's pockets and took his drugs, which he and Stines used together. He dragged Gelzer's body to the bathtub where it remained for several days. When a leak from upstairs flooded the tub he moved the body, then later moved it back. He then dismembered Gelzer using a small saw and hammer -- cutting through his arms, legs and neck. He placed the body parts in black plastic garbage bags, stuffed the torso in a suitcase, and shoved everything into the refrigerator and freezer, sealing the door shut with tape and glue.

Gelzer's remains stayed in that refrigerator for nearly two years. His mother reported him missing in April 2022. Nobody knew where he was until January 2024 when a Crime Stoppers tip led police to the apartment.

Investigation

The Investigation

The case remained cold for nearly two years. Kawsheen Gelzer's remains were stored in a taped-shut refrigerator in a Brooklyn apartment the entire time his mother believed him to be simply missing. It was not until January 2024 that a Crime Stoppers tip led NYPD officers to the Nostrand Avenue apartment for a wellness check.

When officers arrived Heather Stines answered the door. She became agitated and combative when officers approached the refrigerator. Officers opened it and found severed body parts in black plastic bags including a head in the freezer compartment. Stines was arrested. The remains were identified as Kawsheen Gelzer through fingerprint matching.

Detectives quickly identified McGee as the prime suspect. They learned he was incarcerated in Virginia on an unrelated identity theft charge and traveled to interview him. On January 31, 2024 after McGee negotiated a cigarette he provided a detailed confession describing both the murder and the dismemberment in full. His prior arrest record included at least 15 property and theft-related offenses across multiple states.

DA Eric Gonzalez called the crime deeply disturbing, saying that McGee not only stole a man's life but then desecrated his body. The cruelty and disregard for human life shown in the case are almost beyond comprehension. McGee was convicted at trial in October 2025 and sentenced to life without parole the following month.

He Is Not Forgotten

Kawsheen Gelzer was 39 years old. He was someone's son. His mother reported him missing in April 2022 not knowing he had already been dead for a month -- not knowing his remains were sealed in a refrigerator in a Brooklyn apartment. She spent two years not knowing what happened to her child.

The man who killed him told detectives he felt no remorse. He told a courtroom that the killing was easy and he would have killed more people if he had stayed free. He got a tattoo to commemorate what he had done. Nicholas McGee will spend the rest of his life in prison. That is justice. But it cannot give Kawsheen back.

Kawsheen Gelzer deserved to be found. He deserved to be mourned properly. He deserved to have his name said. We say it now. We will not forget him.

"This was a deeply disturbing act of violence by a defendant who not only stole a man's life, but then desecrated his body. The cruelty and disregard for human life shown in this case are almost beyond comprehension."
