Dorothy "Dot" Reed Dow was 83 years old and lived alone on her blueberry farm on the 7000 block of Forest Road in the Lone Oak community of Grantville, Georgia, approximately 50 miles southwest of Atlanta in Meriwether County. She and her family operated the farm, where she was known for hiring local people to pick blueberries during harvest season and for inviting workers into her home for dinner after a long day in the fields.
Dorothy was known by those around her as a kind and generous woman. Her warmth toward the people who worked her land was well established in the community. Among those she had employed as seasonal workers were two of the people who would later attack her.
She survived for 23 days following the attack, undergoing multiple surgeries at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She died on August 27, 2016, from injuries sustained during the home invasion. She is buried at Allen Lee Memorial UMC Cemetery in Lone Oak, Meriwether County, Georgia.
On August 2, 2016, two days before the fatal attack, Dorothy Dow's home was burglarized while she was away. Her purse was taken. ATM security footage at a bank captured the individuals who used her debit card, completing two separate withdrawals of $600 each. Investigators identified three of them from the footage: Cortavious Heard, Angela Harmon, and Mina Ellery. Heard and Grady were former seasonal workers who had picked blueberries at the Dow farm and had been inside her home.
In the early morning hours of August 4, 2016, Dorothy was asleep when she was awakened by someone kicking in her back door. Four people entered the home demanding cash. When Dorothy told them she had none, they asked about the whereabouts of her son, who was known to keep a large amount of cash and also lived at the property. The attack lasted approximately one hour. Dorothy sustained two broken arms, broken fingers, lacerations to her face and head from being pistol-whipped, and third-degree burns to the back of her head and down her back after the group poured lighter fluid on her and set her on fire.
Before leaving, one of the perpetrators ripped her medical alert device from her body. After they left, Dorothy used water from a container kept near her sleep apnea machine to extinguish the flames. She made her way to her landline but found it had been ripped from the wall. She reached 911 using her cell phone. She was airlifted to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The group took no money or items from Dorothy's home during the attack.
The investigation began with the August 2 burglary at Dorothy's home. ATM security footage from two separate cash withdrawals made using her stolen debit card identified Cortavious Heard, Angela Harmon, and Mina Ellery. Investigators were in the process of building that case when Dorothy was attacked two days later.
Despite her critical condition, Dorothy was able to assist detectives in identifying her attackers. She confirmed that the group who attacked her were the same people responsible for the earlier burglary, and investigators determined that Heard and Justin Grady had both worked previously as seasonal employees at her blueberry farm, giving them knowledge of the property, the family's routine, and the belief that Dorothy's son kept large amounts of cash on the premises.
The group had targeted the son's cash specifically but found only Dorothy at the property. When she could not provide the information they wanted, the attack escalated. The medical examiner's autopsy confirmed the extent of Dorothy's injuries, including two broken arms, broken fingers, facial lacerations, and third-degree burns to the back of her head and down her back. Despite everything, Dorothy survived long enough to provide a full account to investigators before she died on August 27. Her testimony and the ATM footage were central to the case that led to convictions and life sentences for all four murder defendants.
Dorothy "Dot" Dow fed people. She hired the people around her to work her blueberry farm and invited them into her home for dinner when the day's work was done. That generosity extended to people who had worked her fields and knew the layout of her home, who came back two nights later with a very different purpose.
After being beaten for an hour and set on fire, Dorothy put herself out with a container of water, crawled to a phone, and called for help. She spent 23 days in a burn unit and provided investigators with a full account of what had happened before she died. She was 83 years old and she was, in every meaningful way, tougher than anyone in that room.
All five people responsible for her death were convicted and sentenced. Dorothy Reed Dow is buried at Allen Lee Memorial UMC Cemetery in Lone Oak, Meriwether County, Georgia.
