The Victim

Bethany Ann Israel

Bethany Ann Israel was 30 years old, married to Josh Israel, and approximately four months pregnant when she was killed on May 23, 2024. Her family described her as a cherished wife, daughter, sister, and expectant mother with a radiant spirit and unwavering kindness. Her love for life and the people around her were the hallmarks of who she was.

On the evening of May 23, 2024, Bethany went to her brother Jack Joseph Ball's home in Lakeville, Minnesota for dinner. It was a simple, ordinary plan. She never came home.

Bethany was not just a victim. She was a woman who was loved deeply, who was building a life with her husband, and who was preparing to become a mother. Two lives were taken that night.

01
Background

What We Know

Bethany Ann Israel was married to Josh Israel and approximately 17 to 18 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. On the evening of May 23, 2024, she went to her biological brother Jack Joseph Ball's home on Encina Path in Lakeville, Minnesota for dinner. She arrived at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Several hours passed without any word from Bethany. Family members grew concerned. At approximately 11:00 p.m., their mother drove to the Lakeville home to check on her. When she arrived she witnessed Ball tear out of the house. She entered the residence and found a large amount of blood. She called 911 immediately.

When Lakeville police arrived they found a bloody saw, a hatchet, multiple blood-covered large knives, and dismembered body parts inside the home. Investigators also discovered handwritten journals belonging to Ball in which he expressed anger that his sister was pregnant, writing that she was no longer innocent. Investigators stated there was no evidence to support any claim of wrongdoing by the victim and it remained unclear what he meant by those words.

Shortly after the initial 911 call, a Rosemount resident called police after their home security camera captured a man placing what appeared to be a body part on their front step. Officers responded and located Ball in the backyard of a neighboring residence. He was covered in blood and had a self-inflicted knife wound to his throat. He was transported to Regions Hospital and later placed under arrest. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Bethany's cause of death as complex homicidal violence.

The Investigation

The Lakeville Police Department responded to the 911 call and found an extensive crime scene inside Ball's residence. Officers recovered a bloody saw, a hatchet, large blood-covered knives, and dismembered body parts. Handwritten journals belonging to Ball were also found in which he expressed anger at his sister for being pregnant, writing that she was no longer innocent.

Multiple agencies assisted with the investigation including the Apple Valley Police Department, Rosemount Police Department, Dakota County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Additional remains were recovered from the surrounding neighborhood following tips from residents.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office determined Bethany's cause of death as complex homicidal violence and confirmed she was between 17 and 18 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Ball admitted responsibility for the killing. He claimed his sister was no longer innocent though investigators found no evidence to support any wrongdoing by the victim.

She Is Not Forgotten

Bethany Ann Israel was 30 years old and four months pregnant. She went to her brother's house for dinner. That is all she did. She trusted him. She had no reason not to. She never came home.

Her family described her as a cherished wife, daughter, sister, and expectant mother with a radiant spirit and unwavering kindness. Her husband Josh lost his wife and his unborn child in a single night. Her mother was the one who found the blood. Her mother was the one who called 911. No family should ever have to survive something like that.

Two lives were taken on May 23, 2024. Bethany Ann Israel and her unborn baby. We will say both of their names. We will not forget either of them.

"Bethany was a cherished wife, daughter, sister, and expectant mother. Her radiant spirit and unwavering kindness are the legacies she leaves behind."
