Austin Dean Pikaart was 17 years old. He lived with his mother, Katie Lee, at the Bay Pointe Apartments on East 16th Street in Holland, Michigan. His family described him as caring, humorous, playful, and someone who deeply loved his family and friends. He loved video games and anything space or galaxy themed.
Austin would have turned 18 on February 22, 2025, the day after he was killed. He was found in his bed by officers who responded to his mother's 911 call in the early morning hours of February 21. He had a large laceration to his neck and cuts to his left arm. A forensic pathologist determined his cause of death to be the cut to his neck, and his death was ruled a homicide.
His family established a GoFundMe to cover his funeral expenses. His aunt, Alisa Pikaart, spoke publicly after his mother was sentenced. Austin deserved to turn 18. He deserved to grow up.
On February 20, 2025, the day before Austin was killed, both he and his mother Katie Lee attempted to die by overdosing on medication. The attempt did not succeed for either of them. According to Lee's account, Austin did not want to turn 18, which was the following day. Lee said her plan had been to kill herself so that she could be with her son, and that she believed she was acting out of love.
In the early morning hours of February 21, Lee drugged Austin, then slashed his wrist and throat while he was unconscious. At 4:15 a.m., she called 911. In the call, which was obtained through a public records request, Lee sounds calm. She told the dispatcher her son would not stop breathing and that she had been trying for a while to get him to stop. She told the dispatcher her son had not wanted to turn 18, that she had used a knife, and that she had done it out of love. She said she had cut him after he passed out, telling dispatchers he did not feel anything.
When officers from the Holland Police Department arrived at the Bay Pointe Apartments, Lee was outside the unit holding a large kitchen knife raised at shoulder height. She refused multiple commands to drop the knife and was Tasered. She dropped the knife briefly, then attempted to retrieve it, and was Tasered again. She told officers they were supposed to kill her so she could be with her son. Officers found Austin in his bed. A forensic pathologist determined the cut to his neck was the cause of death. Lee was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible overdose before being taken into custody.
The Holland Police Department responded to the Bay Pointe Apartments at 4:15 a.m. on February 21, 2025, following Lee's 911 call. Officers were met immediately by Lee holding a large kitchen knife. After taking her into custody, they located Austin in his bedroom. Homicide detectives were called to the scene. The Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office obtained an arrest warrant and Lee was charged on February 24, 2025.
The investigation included a forensic autopsy, which confirmed cause of death as the laceration to Austin's neck. Lee's 911 call, which police obtained through a public records request, served as direct evidence. Lee's own statements to dispatchers and to officers at the scene, combined with the physical evidence, left little ambiguity about what had happened. Lee had also told the dispatcher that the two of them had attempted to overdose together the day before.
Lee's preliminary mental health evaluation was scheduled in early March 2025. Her case proceeded through Ottawa County Circuit Court, and she entered her guilty plea in October 2025. At sentencing in January 2026, Judge Hulsing credited her with nearly a year already served. The concurrent sentence for resisting and obstructing was included in the overall 60 to 90 year term.
Austin Dean Pikaart was 17 years old. He would have turned 18 the next day. He loved video games and space and galaxy themes. His family described him as caring, humorous, and playful, someone who loved his family and friends. He deserved the chance to become an adult, to find out what his life could be.
A parent's most fundamental obligation is to protect their child's life. Austin's mother made a different choice. Whatever pain existed in that apartment, whatever despair or crisis of thinking, no child's life belongs to a parent to take. Austin did not have a voice in that courtroom. His aunt Alisa did. "She's not a mom," Alisa said after the sentencing. "She's a monster."
Austin Dean Pikaart was 17 years old. He is not forgotten.
