Ariel Sellers

Ariel was placed with Isaac Kalua III (known as Sonny) and Lehua Kalua in Waimanalo, Hawaii. In January 2021, she was officially adopted and her name was legally changed to Isabella Kalua. She was six years old.

She was reported missing in September 2021. Investigators later determined she had already been dead for weeks. Her body has never been found.

Background

What We Know

Ariel Sellers lived in Hawaii with her biological parents, Melanie Joseph and Adam Sellers, along with her three siblings. In 2019, Ariel and her siblings were removed from their home by Hawaii Child Welfare Services. Family Court later terminated her biological parents' parental rights and all four children entered the foster care system.

Ariel was placed with Isaac Kalua III (known as Sonny) and Lehua Kalua in Waimanalo, Hawaii. During the foster placement period between 2019 and January 2021, records later reviewed by journalists documented multiple bone fractures, bruising, noticeable weight loss, and developmental and behavioral concerns. Court explanations presented at the time suggested possible medical or developmental conditions to account for some of the injuries. Despite these documented concerns, the placement continued and adoption proceedings moved forward.

In January 2021, Ariel was officially adopted by Isaac and Lehua Kalua. Her name was legally changed to Isabella Kalua. She was six years old.

Investigators later alleged Ariel had been killed weeks before she was reported missing, in mid-August 2021. A sibling statement referenced in court documents described witnessing abuse inside the home. One of the children told investigators that Ariel was placed inside a dog cage and that duct tape had been placed over her mouth and nose. The child stated that Ariel did not wake up. Her body was allegedly concealed and disposed of. Her remains have never been recovered.

Investigation

The Investigation

Following the September 13, 2021 missing persons report, extensive search efforts were conducted in Waimanalo and surrounding areas. Search operations included ground searches by Honolulu Police Department officers, volunteer search teams, door-to-door canvassing, searches of nearby brush and wooded areas, and examination of the Kalua residence under court-issued search warrants.

Police later returned to the Waimanalo property after the arrests to conduct additional evidence searches. Despite these efforts, Ariel's body has not been located. Law enforcement has stated they believe her remains were concealed and disposed of shortly after her death.

Ariel's death prompted widespread scrutiny of Hawaii's child welfare system. Investigative reporting revealed that concerns about injuries and weight loss had been documented during her foster placement before adoption was finalized. Questions were raised about whether warning signs were fully investigated or adequately presented to the court.

Legal efforts sought access to sealed Family Court records. The Hawaii Supreme Court later ordered significant portions of those records released, citing strong public interest in understanding how the case was handled. Ariel's surviving siblings, through legal guardians, have pursued civil litigation alleging failures in oversight and protection during the foster and adoption process.

She Is Not Forgotten

Ariel Sellers was six years old. She entered the foster care system because the adults responsible for her safety failed her. She was placed in a home where warning signs were documented and ignored. She was adopted by people who allegedly took her life. And then she was reported missing as if she had simply walked away.

Her body has never been found. Her adoptive parents have pleaded not guilty and await trial. The Hawaii child welfare system that placed her in that home faces serious questions about what was missed and why.

Ariel deserved protection at every step. She did not get it. We will not stop saying her name until there is full accountability for everyone who failed her.

"Ariel deserved protection at every step. The system failed her. We will not forget her name."
