Madalina Cojocari, Age 11 at Disappearance

Madalina Cojocari was born on April 11, 2011, in Romania, and was living with her mother Diana Cojocari and her stepfather Christopher Palmiter in Cornelius, North Carolina, at the time of her disappearance. She was 11 years old and a sixth-grader at Bailey Middle School. She was described as having brown hair and brown eyes and standing approximately 4 feet 10 inches tall. She held passports for both Moldova and Romania, both of which were later found in her mother's car after she went missing.

On November 21, 2022, Madalina was captured on school bus surveillance footage getting off the bus at her home on Victoria Bay Drive in Cornelius. She was wearing jeans, pink, purple, and white Adidas shoes, and a white t-shirt and jacket. That footage is the last confirmed public sighting of her. No other surveillance footage of her was found anywhere in the subsequent search.

Her parents told police they last saw her on November 23, 2022. They did not report her missing until December 15, 2022, 24 days after the last known sighting. As of May 2026, Madalina Cojocari has been missing for more than two and a half years. She would now be 14 years old. The Cornelius Police Department, FBI, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continue to actively investigate her disappearance. Foul play is suspected.

01
Overview

What We Know

Madalina Cojocari was last seen on November 21, 2022, stepping off her school bus at her home on Victoria Bay Drive in Cornelius, North Carolina. She was 11 years old. School bus surveillance footage captured that moment; it is the last known video of her. No additional footage was ever found, not from the surrounding neighborhood, not from any camera in the area. Her bus stop was directly adjacent to her home.

Her mother, Diana Cojocari, and stepfather, Christopher Palmiter, told police they last saw Madalina on November 23, 2022, two days after the last confirmed sighting. They did not report her missing to law enforcement until December 15, 2022, more than three weeks after they claimed she was last in the home. Under North Carolina law, a parent or guardian who knows a child is missing and fails to report it is subject to a Class I felony charge. Both were charged with that offense and both were ultimately convicted.

Investigators found no evidence that Madalina left the home voluntarily. Her Moldovan and Romanian passports were both found in Diana Cojocari's car. Both documents were present, meaning Madalina could not have traveled internationally with either. Search warrants executed at the family home revealed stains that were swabbed and submitted for analysis. A carpet from an upstairs spare bedroom was found to have been burned before police were notified of the disappearance. Palmiter himself testified during his trial that Diana had been burning things more often during the period around Madalina's disappearance.

Investigators discovered that in December 2022, Diana Cojocari had driven to the mountains of western North Carolina, claiming she was searching for Madalina. On December 3, a gas station attendant in Hickory, North Carolina, observed Diana's car, which contained children's toys, but no child. On December 16, Sugar Mountain Police captured surveillance photographs of a man and a young female together who were described as matching the appearance of Madalina and her only known blood relative in the United States. The two were also seen together at a Lowe's Foods supermarket in Linville, North Carolina. Those sightings have not been publicly confirmed as Madalina, and their significance to the investigation has not been disclosed.

Diana Cojocari was also found to have paid a priest in Moldova a combined $4,000 in the weeks following Madalina's disappearance, before and after speaking with him by phone for more than ten minutes. She messaged her cousin in Moldova on December 2, 2022, before Madalina was reported missing, saying she needed to speak with him urgently. Early in the investigation, search warrants indicated investigators were examining the possibility of sexual exploitation. As of May 2026, Madalina Cojocari has not been found. No murder charges have been filed. Diana Cojocari has been named a suspect in her daughter's disappearance and is believed to be in Moldova, a country with which the United States has no extradition treaty.

Law Enforcement

The Investigation

The Cornelius Police Department opened an investigation into Madalina Cojocari's disappearance on December 15, 2022, the day her parents finally reported her missing. The FBI Charlotte field office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation joined the effort. Chief David Baucom has described the investigation as long and grueling, spanning hundreds of court documents and search warrants executed against cell phones, social media accounts, call records, bank accounts, and the family property. As of May 2026, law enforcement has stated that everything remains on the table.

Arrest Report

The arrest report filed in connection with the charges against Diana Cojocari and Christopher Palmiter for failure to report a missing child, December 2022. The document details the initial investigation, the parents' statements to police, and the statutory basis for the failure-to-report charge under North Carolina law.

The forensic work has been extensive. Search warrants show investigators swabbed stains from multiple locations inside the family home, including a light switch and bedroom carpet. A carpet from an upstairs spare bedroom was found to have been burned before police were notified of the disappearance. Palmiter testified during his trial that Diana Cojocari had been burning items more frequently during the period around Madalina's disappearance. Investigators also discovered that both of Madalina's passports — her Moldovan and Romanian documents — were found inside Diana's car after the girl was reported missing, indicating Madalina could not have traveled internationally with either document.

Madalina Cojocari

Digital forensics revealed a lengthy WhatsApp call between Diana Cojocari and a man in Moldova and a December 2 message to her cousin saying she urgently needed to speak with him — sent two weeks before she reported her own daughter missing. Bank records showed that Diana sent Western Union payments to her mother and a priest in Moldova in the weeks after Madalina's disappearance, totaling $4,000 to the priest alone. Investigators obtained records from social media accounts, identified a call with a Moldovan man as significant, and interviewed Diana's cousin in Moldova through Moldovan authorities. Early warrants indicated investigators were examining the possibility of sexual exploitation of Madalina as a minor.

In November 2025, Cornelius Police posted a public message warning against misinformation circulating about the investigation, noting that it can distract from and hinder active investigative work. The department confirmed that Diana Cojocari legally departed the United States after serving her sentence and that law enforcement did not have the authority to prevent her from leaving. She is believed to be in Moldova. Because the United States does not have an extradition treaty with Moldova, any future charges against Diana would face significant jurisdictional obstacles. Chief Baucom has stated consistently that the investigation has not closed and that he believes the department is getting closer to the truth. A $25,000 reward remains active for information leading to an arrest or conviction.

Still Missing

They Are Not Forgotten

Madalina Cojocari was 11 years old. She liked horses. She was a sixth-grader at Bailey Middle School in Cornelius. She stepped off her bus on November 21, 2022, and walked toward home, and then she was gone, and the world has not been able to find her since.

The people who were supposed to keep her safe did not report her missing for 24 days. The people who were supposed to tell the truth have not told it. Her mother, who was convicted of failing to report her own daughter missing, obtained a new passport from the Moldovan embassy and left the country rather than face the investigation into what happened. There is something in that flight that the investigators and the community of Cornelius continue to work with every day.

Chief Baucom has said, every year, that the department is getting closer. He has said that every day they are a little bit closer than they were the day before. That is not nothing. The investigation has not closed. The reward is active. The age-progression images are being circulated. Someone knows something. That is the premise on which the search continues and it is the premise on which this page is written.

Madalina Cojocari. Born April 11, 2011. Last seen November 21, 2022. She would be 14 years old today. She is not forgotten.
