Mother Jennifer Santanello
Daughter Nova Grace, age 2 at disappearance

Layla Marie Santanello was a 20-year-old woman from Kingsport, Tennessee, in the northeastern corner of the state near the Virginia border. She was creative, spirited, and deeply devoted to her two-year-old daughter Nova Grace, whom she called the center of her world. Her mother Jennifer Santanello described her as a beautiful, bright light in the world; a young woman whose smile could light up a city and whose warmth drew people to her.

Layla had been living in Kingsport with her boyfriend Michael Thompson at the time of her disappearance. In the period leading up to June 27, 2023, her relationship with Thompson had become strained and the couple had a falling out. Layla left their shared home and spent several days staying with friends before checking into the Americourt Hotel on American Way on June 25. She was last seen near that hotel in the early morning hours of June 27.

Her mother Jennifer has been public about the fact that Layla had been struggling with fentanyl addiction in the period before her disappearance and had declined treatment. Jennifer has also been clear that whatever difficulties Layla was facing, she loved her daughter Nova Grace with everything she had and would not have left her willingly. "Layla would never leave her daughter behind," her stepmother Brittany Zeitler has said publicly.

Layla Santanello has been missing since June 27, 2023. Nova Grace, who was two years old when her mother disappeared, is now being raised by family members who have not stopped searching for answers. An organization called Layla's Hope, founded in her name, works to connect the Kingsport community with addiction recovery and mental health resources in her memory.

Background

What We Know

In the days leading up to her disappearance, Layla Santanello had been staying with friends after a falling out with her boyfriend Michael Thompson at their shared home at 562 Dale Street in Kingsport. The relationship had become strained after Thompson discovered Layla had started seeing someone else. On June 25, 2023, Layla checked into the Americourt Hotel at 1900 American Way in Kingsport.

On June 26, guests at the Americourt reported seeing Layla going door to door in an apparent state of distress. She declined offers of help from multiple strangers. That morning she had an altercation with an unknown person and told a friend, "I have to take care of something." Motel staff threatened to evict her because of the commotion. Around midday on June 26, Layla walked off toward nearby woods. Warehouse workers in the area reported seeing her from a distance. Her family believes she was frightened and running from someone she had encountered at the hotel.

The last confirmed sighting of Layla Santanello occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. on June 27, 2023, in a field adjacent to the Americourt Hotel. She was barefoot, wearing a white tank top and black leggings. She was last seen walking in the direction of the Kingsport Greenbelt, a trail system that runs through the city. She was not seen again after that point.

A family member reported Layla missing to the Kingsport Police Department on June 27 after they were unable to reach her. Investigators were subsequently able to trace her movements from the Americourt to the Greenbelt but found no further confirmed sightings beyond the 6:15 a.m. field sighting. An early lead suggesting she had been seen at the Marble Slab Creamery at East Stone Commons was later ruled out by KPD; the woman seen there was identified as someone else.

In the weeks following her disappearance, Layla's family began receiving fraudulent Cash App requests from someone using Layla's account, beginning July 10 and continuing through August 12. One message contained the character string "twlmg," which the family interpreted as "they won't let me go." Another read: "We have Layla. She owes a drug debt, and if she doesn't pay, you'll find her chopped up into pieces." The IP address and device associated with the Cash App account were traced to the home of Michael Thompson. Thompson was arrested in March 2024 and charged by the Sullivan County Grand Jury with Extortion and Identity Theft. KPD has confirmed that no evidence connects Thompson to Layla's disappearance itself.

As of April 2026, Layla Santanello has been missing for nearly three years. Kingsport Police reportedly told Layla's stepmother Brittany Zeitler in December 2023 that they believe they know what happened, who is responsible, and roughly where Layla is, but could not yet share details. No charges have been filed in connection with her disappearance. The case remains active and classified as endangered missing.

The Investigation

The investigation into Layla Santanello's disappearance is led by the Kingsport Police Department, with active support from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. KPD has confirmed the case is a priority for the department. As of early 2024, investigators had obtained and served more than 30 search warrants, issued more than 25 subpoenas, conducted six ground searches using drones, Forward Looking Infrared technology, and K-9 units, and entered Layla's case into VICAP and NamUs. The Holly Bobo Act, which provides TBI support in missing persons investigations, was invoked for Layla's case.

Investigators traced Layla's movements on June 27 from the Americourt Hotel to the Greenbelt trail area but were unable to establish a confirmed sighting beyond the 6:15 a.m. field sighting adjacent to the hotel. A search warrant was executed at 562 Dale Street, the residence Layla shared with Michael Thompson, on August 4, 2023. A large multi-agency search of the East Stone Commons area on August 15 and 16, 2023, involving approximately 100 first responders across a 320-acre zone, yielded no new evidence. Additional searches have been conducted in subsequent months, with ground searches paused during winter and resumed each spring.

The fraudulent Cash App scheme conducted by Michael Thompson following Layla's disappearance complicated the early investigation by introducing false leads suggesting she was being held hostage. Thompson was arrested in March 2024 and charged with Extortion and Identity Theft. KPD has confirmed there is no evidence connecting Thompson to her disappearance. His arrest is treated as a separate matter from the missing persons case.

Layla's mother Jennifer Santanello hired a private investigator who set up an anonymous tip line at 423-212-5804. All information submitted to that line goes directly to the investigator. Jennifer has also consulted psychics and remote viewers as part of the broader search effort. The Community United Effort organization has been engaged to review the case and support the family's search.

Layla's stepmother Brittany Zeitler has publicly stated that KPD told her in December 2023 that investigators believe they know what happened, who is responsible, and roughly where Layla is. Neither KPD nor TBI has publicly confirmed or elaborated on this claim, citing the ongoing investigation. Jennifer Santanello has said she has full faith that KPD is working the case and not setting it aside. As of April 2026, no charges have been filed in connection with Layla's disappearance.

In Memoriam

She Is Not Forgotten

Layla Santanello was 20 years old and she had a two-year-old daughter named Nova Grace. That is the most important thing about her. She was a mother, and she loved that little girl, and everyone who knew her has said the same thing: she would not have left Nova Grace. Not willingly. Not without a goodbye. Not without fighting to get back.

She was also a young woman who was struggling, the way a lot of young people struggle, and who was facing something frightening on those days before she disappeared. She went door to door at a hotel asking for help and nobody knew how to give it to her. She told a friend she had something to take care of and walked out into the morning barefoot, and that was the last anyone saw of her for certain.

Her mother Jennifer has been her voice every day since. Jennifer has walked the streets of Kingsport and handed out flyers and stood in front of cameras and refused to let the story go quiet. She founded Layla's Hope so that something good could grow out of the worst thing that ever happened to her family. The organization connects people in Kingsport to addiction recovery and mental health resources because Layla's struggle was real and it deserves to be honored, not hidden.

Nova Grace is growing up. She is nearly five years old. She deserves to know what happened to her mother. Layla Santanello is not forgotten and she is not given up on. Her family is still here. Her daughter is still here. And whoever knows where Layla is still has the chance to do the right thing.
