The Victim

Delilah Villegas

Delilah Villegas was 19 years old and had been diagnosed with severe autism. She was nonverbal. She lived on Horseshoe Trail in Balch Springs, Texas, in a home she shared with her mother Crystal Canales, her grandmother, and her great-uncle. A woman whose daughter had attended school with Delilah told CBS News Texas that she had seen Delilah regularly from 2014 to 2020. When she stopped seeing her around the neighborhood, she assumed the family had moved. Delilah had not moved. She had been withdrawn from the world outside that house.

Family members described Delilah as sometimes becoming violent, kicking and punching, which they said discouraged interaction with her. Police stated this behavior made family members "discouraged to interact with our victim." Delilah's grandmother told investigators she had not seen her granddaughter in several weeks. Delilah's great-uncle said he had not seen her in approximately a year. Both lived in the same house.

Delilah's last documented hospital visit was in 2021. The last medical call to the home was made in May of that year. She was 19 years old when paramedics arrived on February 14, 2025, and initially estimated her age to be approximately 13 due to her condition. She was found alone in her bedroom, behind a locked door, in a near-fetal position on a concrete floor. She had been there for hours.

Background

What We Know

On the afternoon of February 14, 2025, at approximately 2:33 p.m., Crystal Canales called 911 and reported that her daughter Delilah was having difficulty breathing. Fire department personnel and paramedics responded, intending to perform CPR. Before they reached Delilah's bedroom, they detected a strong foul odor. When they entered, they found Delilah curled in a near-fetal position on a concrete floor next to a single mattress and bedding pallets. They observed she was already deceased. Due to the condition of her body, officers initially estimated she was approximately 13 years old. Medical personnel determined Delilah had been dead for between six and 24 hours before the 911 call was made.

Delilah was described by the responding officer as "skin to bone." She had multiple bruises and contusions across her body, extensive bedsores, and large lacerations with exposed and decaying tissue. Bones were visible through the skin at her right thigh, shoulder, hip, buttocks, hand, and ankle. Officers noted an outline of her body on the concrete floor, indicating she had remained in the same position for a prolonged period. A deadbolt and lock were found on her bedroom door. The investigation also revealed that Delilah had not received medical care since 2021. The last documented medical call to the home was made in May of that year.

When investigators asked Canales about her daughter's injuries, she said she had not sought medical care because Delilah became violent when she attempted to take her to a doctor. She told police she had been treating the bedsores with Neosporin. She also claimed Delilah had been breathing before first responders arrived and had eaten a handful of Goldfish crackers earlier that day, a claim that was inconsistent with the medical examiner's findings. Detectives concluded that a reasonable person in Canales' position would have sought medical care for the severity of Delilah's wounds, and that the failure to do so constituted reckless conduct resulting in serious bodily injury to a disabled person under her care.

Case Timeline

How It Unfolded

May 2021 — Last Known Medical Contact
Delilah Disappears From Public View
The last documented medical call to the Horseshoe Trail home was made in May 2021. Delilah's last hospital visit also occurred that year. A neighbor who had regularly seen her from 2014 to 2020 stopped seeing her around this period and assumed the family had moved. Delilah had not moved.
~Early 2024 — One Year Before Death
Great-Uncle Last Sees Delilah
Delilah's great-uncle, who lived in the same home, told investigators he had not seen her in approximately one year before her death. Her grandmother said she had not seen Delilah in several weeks, despite also living under the same roof.
February 14, 2025 — 2:33 p.m.
911 Call — Delilah Found Dead
Crystal Canales called 911 reporting Delilah was having difficulty breathing. Fire and paramedic personnel arrived and detected a strong foul odor before reaching the bedroom. They found Delilah in a near-fetal position on a concrete floor. She was already deceased. Officers noted an outline of her body on the floor, consistent with an extended period in the same position. Rigor mortis had set in. Medical personnel estimated she had been dead for between six and 24 hours.
February 14–21, 2025
Investigation — Canales Questioned
Balch Springs Police Criminal Investigations Division took over the scene. Investigators examined the injuries, interviewed household members, and reviewed medical records. Canales told police she had not taken Delilah for medical care due to her violent behavior and had been treating her bedsores with Neosporin. The deadbolt and lock on Delilah's bedroom door were documented. A public memorial began growing outside the home on Horseshoe Trail.

Canales Arrested and Charged
One week after Delilah's death, Crystal Canales was arrested and charged with serious bodily injury to a disabled person under her care, a second-degree felony in Texas. She was booked into the Balch Springs City Jail and transferred to the Dallas County Jail. Investigators stated they were continuing to look into the conduct of other household members, including the grandmother and great-uncle. As of early 2026, no additional charges have been publicly reported.

Investigation

The Investigation

The Balch Springs Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and took over the investigation from responding officers. The physical evidence was extensive: the condition of Delilah's body, the outline on the concrete floor, the deadbolt lock on her bedroom door, the absence of any medical records after 2021, and the accounts from household members who had not seen Delilah in weeks or a year despite living in the same home. Balch Springs Police public information officer Pedro Gonzalez described the scene at a press conference, stating the conditions were "unrecognizable for a 19-year-old."

Investigators worked with the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office to establish time and cause of death. The findings were inconsistent with Canales' claim that Delilah had been alive and eating shortly before the call. The investigation also established a broader pattern of neglect: Delilah had not been seen by a doctor in approximately four years, had not been seen by her own household members in weeks to a year, and had not been visible to neighbors or community members for years before her death.

Police stated that they were actively investigating whether any other residents of the home should face charges in connection with Delilah's death. As of early 2026, Canales remains the only person publicly charged. The investigation into the grandmother and great-uncle has not resulted in publicly announced charges.

In Memoriam

She Is Not Forgotten

Delilah Villegas was 19 years old. She was nonverbal. She could not call for help. She could not explain what was happening to her or leave on her own. The people who were supposed to protect her were in the same house, and they either did not see her or chose not to. Neighbors assumed she had moved away. She had not moved. She had been locked away from the world, in a room behind a deadbolt, for years.

People with autism and other disabilities depend entirely on those around them to recognize their suffering and respond. Delilah had no voice in that house. The outline of her body pressed into that concrete floor tells a story of days and weeks and years of being alone. A neighbor's daughter had gone to school with her. She remembered her. The world should too.

Delilah Villegas was 19 years old. She deserved care. She deserved to be seen. She is not forgotten.
